Aims :
1.To learn some new words and some phrases
2.To infer meaning from keywords and context
3.To skim the text to find details
Procedures :
Step1 Introduction
1. Tell the students that bad weather sometimes causes natural disasters,such as snowstorm, rainstorm,earthquake etc. Natural disasters may cause great damage and loss of life.Earthquake is a kind of destructive force .
2. Introduce the Taiwan earthquake
Today we’ll follow Timmy—the survivor’s story to see his personal experiece. It is written in the first person narrative .Timmy is trapped under a fallen building during the earthquake .The earthquake occurred on 21st September1999,at 1.47 a.m .The epicentre of the earthquake was in Chichi town,Nantou County,150km south-west of Taipei. The earthquke struck with a magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter Scale while most people were still sleeping. Casualties,collapsed buildings and other damage were reported in the densely populated areas of Taipei. More than 1,700 people died and over 8,700 people were injured. 12,000 buildings were destroyed and 100,000 people were left homeless. It is believe to be the strongest earthquake to have hit Taiwan last century.
Step2 Presentation
1. Talk to students about the context of surviving an earthquake .Elicit any information about the earthquakes in Taiwan or in other parts of the world.
2. Discuss /Exchange the infomation about the earthquake that students get.
Step3 Listening
1. Play the tape .Students listen carefully and then answer the following questions
1)Where was Timmy? 2)What happened in the shopping centre?
3)What happened to the buildings? 4)How did people react?
5)What did Timmy do? 6)Where was Timmy when the shaking stopped?
7)How did Timmy feel? 8)What did Timmy do while he was waiting for help?
9)How was he rescued?
3. Play the tape again. Students listen and repeat.
Step4 Reading
1. Ask students to quickly skim the text on their own.
2. Ask students to make a list of words and phrases used in the text which describe noise and movement /destruction,fear and hope.
noise: big noise, thunder, screamed,real noise, bombs,shouted,l
movement/destruction:slight shaking,earth started to shake,ranl (widely),pieces of glass and bricks fell down,walls began to come down
fear:screamed,frightened,dark, could not see at all, a moment of fearl
hope:calm down, still alive,bright daylight,safel
3. Check general understanding of the text.
Page93 Part D Do this exercise orally .Check if students can tell the sentences correctly,trying to give their reasons .
Step5 Practice
1. Practise reading in pairs.
2. Read paragraphs one by one.(Praise anyone who read better .)
3. Show the pictures to the students.And then ask them to describe the pictures in their own words according to Timmy’s story .
Homework :
1. Try to recite the text after class
2. Try to find out the useful language points in the text .
