8A Unit 6  Natural disasters   Vocabulary

Yin Caiping

Teaching Objectives:

To indentify the words and phrases to describe weather conditions

To use vocabulary to talk about the weather forecast

Teaching procedures:

Step Lead-in:

1. Play the flash “How is the weather?”

T: A lovely song, isn’t it? Let’s sing it together. OK?

What kinds of weather did you see in the flash? (4 pictures)

The sun is shining in the sky. It is a sunny day.

Spell “sun”--- “sunny”  (Read after T)

There are lots of clouds in the sky. It’s cloudy.

Spell “cloud(s)” cloudy    It is a cloudy day.  (read)

snow(y)     rain(y)

Which weather do you like best? Why?

Topic: On sunny days, we can do…

Step 2: Presentation:

I like snowy days because I can wear my favourite scarves. But I dislike the frosty days. Look at the frost, when the temperature drops below 0. You may see frost on the leaves, especially in the early morning. (Teach “temperature”)  I think the frosty days are usually too cold, so I don’t like the frosty days But I don’t hate it.

I hate stormy days very much. Do you know why? I didn’t have a good time in the Yellow Mountain last year because of the storm. The weather was not too bad before we went to Huangshan. But when we got there, It was foggy at first, we can’t see everything clearly. Then it was windy, the wind is so strong that we all felt really cold. And the weather became worse when we were on the top of the mountain. It was stormy. The temperature drops a lot, too. I didn’t get enough clothes with me, so I’ve got a bad cold there. Do you think that’s lucky?

I’ve told my unlucky trip to the Yellow Mountain to you. Now can you tell me the weather again? Try please.

wind---windy          storm---stormy      (sounds)

     frost--- frosty          fog---foggy

Step 3  Practise:

1.  Read the words after T.

   2.  Now you have got the words about the weather. I’ll show some pictures to you, please tell me how the weather is in each picture.

3.  A competition: Please tell the adjectives of the nouns as quickly as possible.

Read them in pairs.  (answer one by one)

Step 4. Work out the rule:

1. A. Watch carefully about the weather words. How do we change the nouns into adjectives?  Yes, we plus “y” after the nouns.    n. + y ---adj.

B. But what about “fog” and “sun”?

We double-write the last consonant and plus y.   (双写加)

2. A. Try to change these nouns into adjectives:  lucky; healthy; sporty

B. The following two words are a little difficult: noisy; tasty;…

So if there is a silent “e”, we have to take away “e” and plus “y”. (E加,)

Step 5. Discussion:

1. You can change the nouns into adjectives easily. Of course there are some differences between nouns and adjectives. Let’s see more sentences.
